ok fine here are my full thoughts on panic at the disco's new song/album, primarily in relation to idkhow because holy shit this is insane. I'm not going to really touch on the song other than it's bad, unremarkable, and feels soulless. so many people are saying it sounds reminiscent of vices or pretty odd which is like... what?? where?? anyway I don't think the song itself is ripping off idkhow at least in my opinion.
the MUSIC VIDEO, however.... hoo boy. this music video is like if the modern day cain and choke mvs had a baby and that baby had a classmate who was obsessed with copying their every move. so like off-brand walmart idkhow. first of all: Yes, I am aware that idkhow did not invent nor has a trademark on music videos that are styled as an 80s music tv show or even the razzmatazz color palette. if any other band had done something like this, I wouldn't have cared. however, you can't say it isn't at least a little suspicious that Brendon urie is the one doing this?? like it is so rich to me that Brendon has a history of taking credit from dallon (and Ryan ross), and then dallon leaves to have full creative freedom and Brendon's way of coming back is making a music video that is clearly "inspired" by idkhow's music videos. the jacket he's wearing is colorblocked in literally the 4 razzmatazz colors. the tv show host at the beginning introducing the band in a clearly retro theme, not something set in the 2000s. this might be a bit of a stretch I suppose, but the random cuts to the lady selling some kind of white mask. even the way this music video is setup (Brendon's acting, the focus on the band in the background) is clearly more reminiscent of idkhow than panic. and yeah, this is a new era so it's not like I expect the music videos to look like exactly like his old ones. but this just doesn't feel like patd whatsoever.
to very briefly divulge into the lyrics, "Someone did me wrong, stole my favorite song, yes, it really hurt (Really hurt)" is like... would it kill you to be a little bit subtle. I've seen theories that this is about the trump admin using high hopes as part of their campaign, but personally I feel like that's too random of a callout and I think this is about dallon and girls/girls/boys. maybe it's bias talking but that was the first thing that came to mind; Brendon co-opted g/g/b into his own meaning instead of dallon's original one and ever since people became aware of that, Brendon fans dislike dallon for "stealing" g/g/b away from Brendon. this line is also laughably ironic because Brendon has basically stolen everything related to panic from fever-twtltrtd.
YOU KNOW WHAT? if you want a crack theory I'll give you a fucking crack theory.
the last two lines of viva las vengeance read as follows: "I'm being buried alive / Didn't wanna kill the DJ / But it can't hurt to try". I saw someone on Tumblr say that "DJ" could be referring to Dallon (James), and originally I was like meh that's a stretch because I had thought it was one of the album song titles and was probably referring to, you know, an actual DJ. I just realized now that it's not a title, it's this lyric at the end of VLV. in my humble opinion most of the lyrics in this song don't make sense and I have no clue what else this could be referring to. a genius annotator theorizes that it references a line from The Smiths song "Panic", one that has previously been compared to the band name. so maybe that's all it is, but listen to THIS:
the previous line is "I'm being buried alive". a genius annotator compares this line to This Is Gospel (Don’t try to sleep through the end of the world / And bury me alive / Cause I won’t give up without a fight). Naturally, that got me thinking about how Dallon wrote a generous portion of that album, so I went to check the details to refresh myself. according to Dallon himself, Dallon wrote all of TIG except the first verse and the line "The fear of falling apart". What does that mean, dear reader? It means that dallon wrote this aforementioned "bury me alive" line that Brendon is allegedly referencing in VLV right before he says "DJ". Therefore, this could be referring to how he "didn't want" to have beef with Dallon, but now he's saying fuck it and going all in on him. Especially partnered with the fact that the music video is an idkhow rip off...
but obviously that's just a theory. I could be completely off, and I probably am tbh. a lot of people have been going in on the tracklist and comparing them to idkhow song titles, and I don't really see those comparisons as valid. but this.. idk just think about it.
